When people talk about successful African entrepreneurs, 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂 is one name that consistently stands out. He is not simply a businessman. Over several decades, he has built a career that cuts across banking, investment, energy, hospitality, power, technology, philanthropy and entrepreneurship.
But his story did not begin with a huge corporation or a billion-dollar investment.
It began with a young Nigerian who started his career as a salesperson.

Today, 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗢𝗻𝘆𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗶 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂, popularly known as 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂, is the founder and chairman of Heirs Holdings, chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), chairman of Transcorp, founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, and soon to be chairman of 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆.

His career has made him one of the most prominent business figures in Africa.




𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Tony Elumelu was born in 1963 in Nigeria and was raised and educated in Africa.
His educational background includes a degree in 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 from Ambrose Alli University and a Master's degree in 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 from the University of Lagos.
His early years did not immediately suggest that he would eventually become one of Africa's leading investors.
Before becoming a major figure in banking and investment, 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂 started his professional career as a salesman.
That beginning is important because it shows one of the recurring themes of his career: starting small, learning the business environment and gradually taking on bigger responsibilities. By his mid-20s, he had already risen rapidly within the banking industry.




𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿
Elumelu's major professional breakthrough came through banking.
He joined Union Bank of Nigeria early in his career and worked his way up through the industry.
His career took a dramatic turn in the 1990s when he and a group of investors acquired a struggling Nigerian bank known at the time as 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘀𝗻𝗸.
The bank was subsequently renamed 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸. Rather than simply maintaining the existing institution, the new owners attempted to restructure and grow it.
Elumelu became one of the central figures behind the transformation.

Furthermore, according to 𝗨𝗕𝗔(𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮), he helped turn the financially distressed Standard Trust Bank into a top-five financial-services player in Nigeria. This experience would later become one of the defining features of his career: taking businesses with significant challenges and attempting to transform them into stronger institutions.




𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗕𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
One of the biggest moments in Tony Elumelu's banking career came in 2005.
𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸, merged with 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 commonly known as 𝗨𝗕𝗔.
The transaction was described by 𝗨𝗕𝗔 as the largest merger in the banking sector in sub-Saharan Africa at the time.
𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂. subsequently became the 𝗖𝗘𝗢 of the enlarged UBA. Under his leadership, 𝗨𝗕𝗔 expanded beyond its traditional Nigerian base and developed into a pan-African financial institution.
This was significant because Elumelu's vision was no longer limited to building a successful Nigerian company. He increasingly focused on building African businesses that could operate across borders.

Today, UBA operates across numerous African markets as well as international financial centres, and serves tens of millions of customers globally.




𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀:
In 2010, Tony Elumelu left his position at UBA.
For many people, leaving the leadership of one of Nigeria's major banks could have represented the end of a career peak.
But for Elumelu, it became the beginning of another chapter. He founded 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 in 2010.
𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 became the vehicle through which he could invest across different sectors instead of focusing on banking alone. The company describes itself as a family-owned African investment company focused on long-term investments in strategic sectors of the African economy.

Heirs Holdings is arguably the foundation of Tony Elumelu's second major business chapter.
Rather than putting all his resources into one industry, Elumelu adopted a diversified investment approach.

The idea is relatively simple:
Invest in sectors that are important to Africa's economic development and build businesses that can create both financial and social value. Through Heirs Holdings and its portfolio companies, his business interests now stretch across several major areas of the African economy. The group says its portfolio companies employ more than 30,000 people.



𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗿𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆
Energy is one of the most significant parts of Elumelu's current business portfolio.
Through Heirs Energies, his group entered Nigeria's oil and gas industry.
A major milestone came with the acquisition of a participating interest in OML 17, a significant Nigerian oil asset.
The business has since become an important part of the group's strategy around Africa's energy resources.
According to Elumelu's official biography, Heirs Energies currently has production capacity of about 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and significant reserves and additional exploration resources.
The move into oil and gas was particularly significant because Elumelu had built much of his earlier fortune outside the oil sector.
His investment philosophy has increasingly focused on African ownership and African participation in strategic industries.



𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽
Another major part of Tony Elumelu's business career is 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗰, commonly known as 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽, is one of Nigeria's largest publicly quoted conglomerates. Elumelu chairs the company. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 has interests in sectors including power and hospitality. Two of it's prominent businesses are 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 and 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘀.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 is involved in electricity generation, while 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘀 operates major hospitality assets, including the iconic 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗯𝘂𝗷𝗮.

Through 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽, 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂 has therefore been involved in industries that directly affect everyday economic activity: electricity, tourism, hospitality and infrastructure.




𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗕𝗔 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆
Even after leaving the CEO position, Tony Elumelu remained closely connected to UBA.
He currently serves as Chairman of UBA Group.
BA has grown into one of Africa's major financial-services groups, with operations across Africa and international markets.

The bank provides services to corporate, commercial, SME and individual customers. 𝗔ccording to Elumelu's official biography, UBA serves more than 35 million customers globally.
His continued association with UBA is a reminder of how important banking has been to his career.

It was in banking that he developed much of the experience that later shaped his investment strategy.
But, Tony Elumelu's story is not only about business.
In the same year he founded Heirs Holdings, he established the Tony Elumelu Foundation, commonly known as 𝗧𝗘𝗙. The Foundation focuses on entrepreneurship and economic empowerment across Africa.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗘𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘂 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲
One of TEF's most recognised initiatives is its entrepreneurship programme.
The programme provides selected African entrepreneurs with training, mentorship and non-refundable seed capital. It's ambition is to help young Africans turn business ideas into sustainable enterprises.

The programme has attracted entrepreneurs from across the continent. The Foundation says that since its inception, it has identified and funded more than 24,000 young African entrepreneurs and built a digital ecosystem reaching more than 2.5 million Africans. The programme is significant because it represents a different approach to entrepreneurship development. Rather than simply telling young Africans to "be entrepreneurs," it attempts to provide them with capital, knowledge, mentorship and networks.



𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆
Seplat Energy marks a major new chapter in Tony Elumelu’s business journey. Through Heirs Holdings and Heirs Energies, Elumelu acquired a 20.07% stake in Seplat Energy in 2025, becoming its largest shareholder. He joined the company’s board in 2026 and is set to become Chairman in January 2027. The move further strengthens his growing influence in Nigeria’s energy sector.

One of Tony Elumelu's most associated ideas is Africapitalism.
In simple terms, Africapitalism argues that the private sector should be an important driver of Africa's development. For Elumelu, making money and creating social impact do not necessarily have to be opposing goals. A business can be profitable while also creating jobs, improving infrastructure, providing useful services and contributing to economic development.

This philosophy explains much of his investment strategy.
