๐—ฆ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฝ: The Startup Building Africa's Next Super App Through Food Delivery

The African technology ecosystem is filled with ambitious startups solving everyday problems, but only a few are thinking beyond a single product. One of those companies is ๐—ฆ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฝ, a startup that began with food delivery but has a much bigger ambition, to become Africa's next super app.

Swoop was founded in 2025 by ๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ and ๐—˜๐—ฑ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฅ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜‡. Before launching the company, ๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜† was a student at the ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ, ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜† but chose to leave school after receiving the prestigious Thiel Fellowship, a program that supports young entrepreneurs with funding to build innovative companies instead of completing a traditional university education.

Interestingly, Swoop did not begin in Nigeria.
The startup was first launched in ๐—˜๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ (formerly ๐—ฆ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ) under the name ๐—ง๐—ต๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ผ. The founders wanted to understand the challenges of African logistics, food delivery, and digital commerce in a smaller market before expanding into larger economies. Within a short period, the platform gained thousands of users, proving there was demand for a faster, technology-driven delivery service. Encouraged by this success, the company rebranded as Swoop and prepared for expansion into Africa's biggest consumer marketโ€”Nigeria.

Nigeria's population, growing middle class, and increasing smartphone adoption make it one of Africa's most attractive technology markets. However, food delivery remains challenging because of traffic congestion, inconsistent logistics, hidden delivery charges, and unreliable customer experiences.
Rather than seeing these issues as obstacles, Swoop viewed them as opportunities to build a better delivery platform. In April 2026, the company officially launched in Lagos, beginning with Yaba, one of Nigeria's leading technology hubs. Operations later expanded into Surulere and Gbagada, with Ikeja announced as the next location.

Unlike many delivery platforms that rely heavily on discounts, Swoop focuses on transparency and sustainability.

It's platform allows customers to:
- Order meals from nearby restaurants.
- Track deliveries in real time.
- See clear pricing before checkout.
- Receive same-day delivery, etc

One of its most notable policies is that delivery riders keep 100% of the delivery fee, while Swoop earns revenue primarily through a small service fee and merchant commissions. The company believes this model creates better incentives for riders while maintaining transparent pricing for customers.

Only months after entering Nigeria, Swoop announced a $7.3 million seed funding round.
The investment attracted several international venture capital firms, including Long Journey Ventures, Variant, Version One Ventures, Dune Ventures, Soma Capital, Zero Knowledge Ventures, Base Capital, and investor Walter Kortschak.
The funding is being used to improve technology, expand operations, recruit talent, and accelerate the company's long-term vision across Africa.

Although food delivery is its first product, Swoop's ambitions extend much further.

The company plans to introduce:
- Grocery delivery
- Pharmacy delivery
- Digital payments
- Additional lifestyle and everyday services, etc

Its goal is to create an African super appโ€”a single platform where users can access multiple daily services, similar to how super apps operate in parts of Asia.

๐—–๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€
Despite its strong funding, Swoop faces significant competition in Nigeria's food delivery market. Established companies already have loyal customers and extensive logistics networks.

To succeed, Swoop must continue delivering reliable service, attract restaurant partners, support its riders, and earn customer trust while expanding into new cities.

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป
Swoop's journey is still in its early stages, but its vision is far bigger than delivering meals.

From its beginnings in ๐—˜๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ to its expansion into ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ผ๐˜€, the startup has demonstrated a willingness to tackle complex logistical challenges with technology. Backed by international investors and driven by a bold vision, Swoop hopes to become one of Africa's leading digital platform, connecting people not only to food, but eventually to a wide range of everyday services.

If successful, ๐—ฆ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฝ could become one of the startups shaping the future of commerce, logistics, and digital convenience across the African continent.
